Music is Life

I've just done another LO yesterday. AGAIN, I CAN'T POST IT!!! AARRRGGGHH.... cos it's for another challenge and I can only post after the 17th. Hmm... sorry....

Today is Good Friday. I'm not a Christian, so all these holidays are just public holidays and a long weekend to me. Kids are eating their cereal and watching the Nick Junior channel. The Aussie version has this creature called Ollie. He is an Aussie member of America's Sesame Street. So he's furry, big egg-shaped, pink nose, large mouth that's made up of 2 semi-circles.... you get the drift. Anyway, my kids LOVE Ollie. And Ollie sings this "Day of the Week" song everyday. It asks 'Do you know what day it is today?' and goes on to sing the 7 days of the week, and blah blah blah.... then finally tells the kids the actual day of the week for today. So Ellen goes,

"Mom, do you know what day it is today?"
"It's Friday today."
"No. Let Ollie say what day it is today."
"....."

Oh, so now an orange fur ball knows the day of the week and Mommy doesn't?!?!?! Reminds me of a conversation Nemo had with Marlin. I love that movie.

Oh, I tried Ruey's 123 Magic quite a few times with Ellen yesterday. Most times she knew to stop misbehaving. Once she copped the time out. Just a few minutes ago, she picked up a handful of cereal from her bowl. I told her not to do that, and she said, "But I want to...." . I yielded my secret weapon - "That's 1." AND SHE KEPT QUIET and put the cereal back in her bowl!! It's truly 123 Magic!!! LOL

My son loves Thomas the Tank Engine. So much so I had to start visiting the website to educate myself, so I can tell him the right things, like which train is who. The things we do to entertain our kids.

Which brings me to this topic. Do you sing and dance with your kids? I do. We do Wiggles and Hi-5. I do it because my kids are TV addicts. I figured, since I can't peel them from the TV, I might as well do something together with them while watching TV. My kids love it and get super excited when I sing and dance together with them. It's like the whole show just got better when Mommy starts getting silly.

And also because I love to dance. I've always got rhythm, from young. My mother never did any singing or dancing with me, not a Chinese mother in that generation anyway. But she always has the Chinese radio on and sings along with it. Evergreens in Mandarin. I don't know who I got my rhythm and groove from. I've never danced in public until I went to my first disco party which was a school disco night when I was 19. But I've always grooved to music. I still do now. I will always have my radio on in the car, so I will groove and move with the music. I get looks from other drivers but I really don't care. At home, I'll dance a few moves whilst preparing food or cooking. :)

I also played the clarinet in the school band since 8, all they way to 17. That was another quintessential part of my life that I will never forget. That curriculum activity sculpted a big part of my personality.

Music is very important to kids. Give them music, and you'll give them a whole new dimension to life. I have a girlfriend who simply doesn't have rhythm. She's like the guy in Footloose who doesn't have a rhythmic cell in him, and when Kevin Bacon tried teaching him to bop to rhythm, he would be bopping to the odd beat? She's him, except she still can't get it right. I feel sorry for her. I can't imagine my life if I can't bop to music.

What is life without music?

Oh I definite sing and dance with my dd. She is a Hi-5 fan, not really into Wiggles yet. She loves Elmo on SS though. She absolutely loves it though Mummy looks completely like an idiot. I hop and skip at the shopping centres too because I love to see her follow me and do the same. Kids should always hop and skip when they walk!!!

tee hee....I hope I am not that friend who doesn't have rhythm and groove??? I think I do...but I hope I don't come across as I don't.....PERCEPTION...LOL tee hee

I used to do all the wiggle and hi5 dances too....used to keep me fit...maybe that's why I have stacked on the weight in the past year....tee hee...can't dance and groove to Dora the explorer and Harry Potter. Not quite the same.

Glad that the 123 magic is working for you. It really is a sanity saver for me because I hate repeating myself to kids over and over again...it gets to the point where I think they turn off. So now they know...they get two chances then time out. It stops the bad behaviour.....I don't follow any particular form of parenting...but I do lots of bits and pieces....hmmm....gives me an idea for another blog entry. Toodles

*hugs*

I do dance with my kids. Definately. The Wiggles is their fave. We don't have Hi-5 in the US.

Anyway, I also think music is important. However, I wont force them to go to music classes. Having grown up with tons of music classes and exams, I like to educate my dds informally. I also like the idea of educating my dds in rock music and the pop culture. Lucky for me, my late father was a fan of music and I grew up listening to the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
